Itinerary

Day 1Nairobi Airport - Giraffe Manor Hotel

Bucket-list breakfast: STAY AT Giraffe Manor

GETTING THERE We’ll meet you at Jomo Kenyatta International airport and bring you to Giraffe Manor in the leafy Nairobi suburb of Langata, for a sumptuous three-course lunch.

EXPERIENCE This classic ivy-clad manor house is home to a tower of Rothschild’s giraffes that live in the grounds of the hotel. The large veranda and terrace is perfect for feeding them by hand*. These giraffes are all wild and there’s a breeding and conservation programme at the Giraffe Centre located in Giraffe Manor’s grounds, which we invite you to visit. There’s lots to do here including visiting the Karen Blixen Museum, dedicated to the great Danish explorer and a visit to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust where you can meet orphaned elephants. We also offer the chance to shop for art and gifts from local Kenyan designers, artists and craftspeople.

* The giraffes at Giraffe Manor are wild and therefore we cannot guarantee interaction with them at any given time.

Accomodation: Giraffe Manor (Luxury Lodge, Nairobi)

Meals & Drinks: None

Day 2Nairobi Optional Excursions

Giraffe Manor and Nairobi

Enjoy your stay at  Giraffe Manor, an exclusive boutique hotel, owned by The Safari Collection. Often referred to as one of the most instagrammed properties in the world, Giraffe Manor is set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest in the Langata suburb of Nairobi. Explore Nairobi after you check in.

Arts & Culture

Nairobi isn’t New York City or London, but it does offer a number of opportunities to explore the local culture, view art, watch sports, and take in performing arts. Ask your guide or check out local newspapers or websites (such as Nairobi Now and Up Nairobi) to find out about local events, games, and performances during your visit. Below is a list of some of the most popular cultural attractions in Nairobi.

African Heritage House

Designed by American Alan Donovan, co-founder of the African Heritage Pan African Galleries, the house overlooks Nairobi National Park and is a combination of mud architectures from across Africa. Tours, as well as meals and lodging, can be arranged.

Bomas of Kenya

A tourist village where you can learn more about traditional Kenyan culture by experiencing living styles, crafts, music, and dancing.

City Tour

The best way to get to know more about a city is to take a guided walking or driving tour. While we did not get a chance to do this, our driver highly recommended this and said the views of the city center in the evening are quite nice. If you are looking for great sweeping views of the city, you might want to plan a stop at the 28-story Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC). On most days, for a few shillings, the security guard will escort you in an elevator to the top floor where you’ll be treated to amazing city views (there is a revolving restaurant here but it is was closed during our visit)

Karen Blixen Museum

You can tour the famous home and grounds of Danish writer and coffee farmer Karen Blixen. The house has been converted into a museum and the exterior of the house was also used in the film based on Blixen’s famous book Out of Africa.

Kibera Tour

Kibera is a very poor and crowded neighborhood in Nairobi and one of the largest urban slums in Africa. Many companies offer tours and although these can be very educational and eye-opening, slum tourism is quite controversial and can have negative effects on the locals. If you decide to do this, do your research on reputable and responsible Kibera tour companies.

Nairobi National Museum

This museum covers the history of Kenya and Kenya culture, early human ancestry, and specializes in natural history. Other attractions within the grounds include the Nairobi Snake Park, a botanic garden, and a nature trail.

Nairobi Railway Museum

Nairobi traces its modern roots back to being a simple rail depot along the rail route from Mombasa to Uganda. Located near the Nairobi railway station, this museum provides a history of rail travel in East Africa, a chance to see old locomotives, and even some functioning models.

National Gallery

This gallery houses temporary exhibits so you’ll want to check the current exhibit before deciding to visit. The museum currently hosts the Murumbi Collection exhibition, which includes artifacts from across Africa collected by former Vice President Joseph Murumbi, including art, jewelry, postage stamps, books, and other cultural items.

You will  have Lunch at the Famous Utamaduni Restaurant located within Bomas of Kenya. Bomas of Kenya is home to one of largest auditoriums in Africa and displays traditional villages belonging to the several Kenyan tribes.

Accomodation: Giraffe Manor (Luxury Lodge, Nairobi)

Meals & Drinks: None

Day 3 and 4Sala’s Camp, Masai Mara, Fly to experience the Great Migration Safari

GETTING THERE After breakfast, we will transfer you to Wilson Airport for your flight to the Masai Mara. On arrival you’ll head to Sala’s Camp, with a small game drive en-route.

MASAI MARA SAFARI

Your Masai Mara safari will begin the moment you arrive at Sala’s Camp. It sits in one of the best locations in the whole of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Intimate and secluded, it is nestled along the tree lined banks of the Sand River in the southern tip of the reserve. As such, it is less than two kilometres away from the Tanzanian border and enjoys a splendid wild outlook and wonderful views into the Serengeti National Park. This also means that it is one of the first camps in the Mara to witness the legendary annual wildebeest migration which thunders by from June to September each year. With teeming wildlife year round, Sala’s game drives never disappoint. Get excited by exploring some of the wildlife and scenery you can expect to see on your Masai Mara safari, as well as the beautiful camp you will be relaxing in. Cook-out breakfasts and sundowners out on the savannah make for magical memories. The landscape is spectacular, the birdlife impressive and the feeling of being totally immersed in nature cannot be beaten.

Accommodation: Salas’ Luxury Camp, Maasai Mara NP

Meals & Drinks: All meals and Drinks included

About The Lodge

Sala’s Camp, our Masai Mara tented camp, can accommodate up to 18 guests in seven spacious tents. This includes two family suites and two secluded honeymoon tents. Sala’s Camp offers space, comfort and serene wilderness views as well as an amazing safari experience.  When Sala’s Camp first opened as a permanent Masai Mara tented camp in 2006, guests slept in traditional mobile safari tents with bucket showers. A feeling of being totally immersed in nature was a real draw. In 2016 and again in 2017, all our rooms were refurbished to incorporate contemporary touches and elegant interiors. Retaining elements of an ‘under canvas’ mobile safari feel was essential and guests still enjoy a sense of being secluded in nature.

Today, all rooms have en-suite bathrooms with hot showers, separate bathtubs, running water and flushing loos. Our electricity is solar powered with a standby generator for cloudier days. After exhilarating game drives, returning to the tranquillity of a private riverside deck and plunge pool is unbeatable. Our Masai Mara tented camp provides lots of lovely spots in which to curl up with a book, spot wildlife on the other side of the riverbank or simply contemplate the wonderful sights you’ve seen.

Day 5 and 6Fly to Serengeti, Olakira Migration Camp Experience

Fly to Serengeti National Park, Migration Safari

STAY AT Olakira Camp, Southern Serengeti for your migration safari

GETTING THERE After breakfast you’ll be taken to the Keekorok airstrip for a flight to Migori with a packed lunch from the camp. From Migori you will take a road transfer across the Kenya Tanzania border to Tarime. From Tarime you will catch a flight to Ndutu in the Serengeti.

EXPERIENCE The annual Great Migration is the safari-lovers holy grail and the Serengeti National Park has two key areas where it can be seen. Olakira Camp is divided into two camps, both specifically located to follow the migration. Each year the camp moves from the Mara River to the plains of Ndutu, ensuring the optimum viewing opportunities.

Accomodation: Olakira Camp, Southern Serengeti

Meals & Drinks: All meals and Drinks included

Olakira Migration Camp Experience

Olakira Migration Camp follows the migration throughout the year, offering the closest possible view of the action. The canvas tents are designed to blend into the bush without leaving a trace,  though that doesn’t mean we scrimp on comforts. Admire the sprawling plains of the Serengeti or Ndutu region from the dining tent, or spend a leisurely afternoon in an armchair, watching zebras or Thomson’s gazelles pass by. After dark, dinner is served under the stars.

Meals and refreshments

We source our organic produce from local farmers for a menu of wholesome, delicious meals. Start the day with a continental buffet or a full English breakfast. At lunch, the light buffet includes fresh salads and homemade bread. Dinner is a three-course affair served in the dining tent or under the stars.

Day 7Fly to Nairobi Airport, Farewell East Africa

Your departure time will be determined by your international return flight time. Fly to Wilson Airport, followed by a transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Main Destination: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
